Industrial hoists, overhead cranes, goods lifts, and material elevators are the vertical logistics infrastructure of Australian manufacturing plants, warehouses, distribution centres, and construction sites. This inherent self-lock does not eliminate the need for secondary brakes required by AS 1418 (Australian Standards for cranes, hoists, and winches) in all personnel-accessible lifting applications, but it provides the primary mechanical safety layer and significantly reduces the load on secondary brakes. For goods hoists, winch drives, and jib crane slewing where personnel are not at risk from the suspended load, the worm self-lock is frequently the sole holding mechanism.
