For goods hoists and process winches where no person is exposed to a suspended load, the worm self-lock may be accepted as the sole holding mechanism under AS 1418.1 with appropriate engineering justification. For any hoist or crane where persons could be present under or adjacent to the suspended load, AS 1418 requires a secondary automatic brake as the fail-safe holding device. Confirm the applicable classification with a licensed crane inspector before deciding on brake specification.

Self-locking reliability depends on maintaining the worm-bronze friction characteristics through adequate lubrication. Prevention: (1) maintain correct lubricant level and change intervals, (2) inspect shaft seals for integrity annually, (3) avoid lubricant grades with friction-modifying additives that could reduce the interface friction coefficient. For safety-critical hoist applications, a secondary brake provides redundancy if self-lock capability is compromised by lubricant condition.

For most Australian outdoor crane applications, synthetic PAO ISO VG 320 covers the full range: adequate viscosity at –10°C for cold-start in winter, maintains film thickness at +50°C in outback summer, and resists moisture contamination better than mineral oil.
